The steam comes out of a tiny whole at the base of the plates, and it wasn't hot or painful whatsoever. I really liked that I can lock it to store it.
This is such a great product! With other flat irons I have to be very careful not to burn my hair. With this hair straightener, I can use the steam and it leaves my hair straight and looking very shiny and healthy. It does not snag and break my think hair like other split plate straighteners.
